It’s now time to introduce our newest star setter for the Possums – Tess Feery of the Bay City Fisters!
While she may have spent the majority of her life playing basketball, it’s great to see her find her calling in the sport of fistball, where she can finally use her god-given talents in the correct sport. A multiple winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award in her basketball league, and the 2018 winner of the highly-coveted Golden Hands Award, she can finally put those agile feet and hands to work on the fistball field, defending fireballs from attackers in the crucial setter position to keep the ball in play and (closed) hand the ball to the Possums’ attackers on a platter. A fearless warrior, Feery once broke her ribs in a basketball Grand Final and played through the pain, wrapping her torso in bubble wrap to make sure she could still throw a few elbows in the paint; a novel technique that also helped the forearms of some of the newer Possums at their initial trainings.
Another sign that Tess was born for fistball – she is one of five siblings. Hence, we can only assume the other four are an even mix of attackers and defenders. Like any kid in a large family with smart parents, she learned to swim proficiently at a very young age, soon graduating from in the water to floating above it as she took up the arduous sporting pastime of surf boat rowing, with great much success. In fact, she has been so successful in her numerous team-based sporting outings that she has been often referred to as ‘The Feery Godmother’, bringing good fortune to every team.
That said, Tess is not just an athlete with no time to spare for the social life – after boats have been surfed, basketballs rebounded, and fistballs set for the perfect smash, Tess likes to unwind with red wine and espresso martinis. That’s right – martinis made with red wine and espresso, stirred. Rumour has it that this unusual drinking pastime began after a misunderstanding caused by a slurred, mostly incomprehensible request at the bar, and she has simply decided to keep running with it to avoid the embarrassment. Ironic really, given she earns her crust professionally as a speech pathologist.
Regardless, it’s fair to say that we are Feery excited to see her take the field in Australian colours for the first time at the APFC!
